Students love to hear about the places we've been...often they may not have the same opportunity to travel and live vicariously throught our experiences.
Recently, during one summer, I had the opportunity to travel to Alaska. That following year my first graders spent an entire unit of study learning about Alaska in their mainstream classes. I was able to come in as a guest speaker to share my experiences, pictures and "souvenir artifacts" with them. Not only were the ESL students in awe, but many of the others as well.
Our ELLs especially need the "realia" to support their learning and understanding of new concepts and vocabulary.
How have you shared or plan to share your travel experiences with your students?
Don't be shy, we'd love to hear about your travels...
