I see that the calendar for the 2014-2015 school year is waiting for school board approval in my school district. Seems they've decided that since the absentee rate is so high the week of Thanksgiving, the entire week will be vacation time in lieu of the typical Wednesday through Friday.
By doing this, they will be in school on Veteran's Day which has created a bit of a stir in the community. The belief is that students can actually be taught something about Veterans and honor Veterans better when they are in school and not having the day off. Local Veteran groups disagree. A few years ago, the elementary school I was working at had a wonderful Veteran's Day celebration. Former service members of the school community were invited and all classes participated.
What do you think? Better the kids stay in school or have the day off?
