I have been addressing the need for deep conceptual understanding within all math trainings from grades K-12 and one of the topics of discussion has been the use of mnemonics to remember how to do something in mathematics. One of my cohorts just got this email and I was thrilled that many others are trying to "Nix the Tricks". Nix the Tricks - has raised many questions and debates. This site has a free eBook developed by math teachers to open the discussion of learning with understanding.
What are your thoughts about such mnemonics as PEMDAS, FOIL, and others?
This document definitely helps bring out more of the conceptual before procedural concepts that so many teachers and students struggle with. I know that as a former teacher, I hardly ever used FOIL because of so many misconceptions that arose from it. Thanks you for sharing a free resource!
