I remember Andrew. He was a fourth grader in South Bend, Indiana and he seemed very sad the day before Thanksgiving. When I asked him if anything was wrong, he shrugged and mumbled, “Not really”. I continued to converse with Andrew until he blurted out the he wasn’t going to have a Thanksgiving dinner. He confided that his family was invited to a friend’s for dinner and they were vegetarian. I asked him if he liked mashed potatoes. He said yes, but he wanted turkey with it. I patted him on the shoulder indicating that I sympathized with his plight and tried to assure him all would be well.
After the 5 day holiday break, school resumed. Andrew came bouncing in and I greeted him with a smile and “How was it?” He said, “Not bad, a tofu turkey, but lots of vegetables. Then, as he took his seat, he looked up at me smiling and said, “My mom made a turkey dinner on Sunday and it was great!”
