I really enjoyed Geography when I was in school. Back then I had to memorize the countries of Africa, I was in college at the time. The very next year, the names of most of the countries changed, making my information obsolete. Today, memorizing facts such as that are not necessary. We have resources to find that sort of information rather quickly and the luxury of having it constantly updated!
It's Geography Awareness week until the 23rd. National Geographic provides information and resources for this event. The event this year coincides with the 125th birthday of the National Geographic Society.
Are your students able to name the continents, oceans, states, capitals, rivers and more? How do you encourage an awareness of the world your students live in?
