Can you believe it? The final topic of the 2012-2013 academic year. Rather than reflecting back, think to the future...but in multiple ways Please discuss both of the following topics
Topic A
As your year winds down and your students prepare to leave for summer vacations, think of two topics that you wished incoming students would practice over the summer to make them better prepared for your class next fall. Use the forum to pass this information on to a teacher in the grade below you by identifying the grade or class you are teaching and what you want them to practice. By the way, everything is an unacceptable answer.
Topic B
Closer to Christine's heart, you were given lots of swag with the grant this year...unifix cubes, ipads, etc. We know some of you utilized these more than others. Think of a use for your stuff that you did not get time to try this year, but wished you had. Expound a bit on your new application you want to try, i.e. flesh it out and make some plans so that you WILL have time to do it next year.

Topic A: If there were two things I could ask the teacher to make sure the students knew before they got to me, it would be there multiplication facts and how to "think" pictures that go with word problems. Students are so use to having a reference to look at for thier mulitples. This doesn't allow them to take the time to "know" thier multiples. I started working with flash cards and even making them write the multiples frequently. This helped tremendously. I have so many ties when we play around the world! I like to have the students draw pictures so they can SEE the word problem, rather than depend on key words. This really works and the students can SEE if it is multiplication or division they need to do.
Topic B: I loved having the Ipad as a resource! I only wish I had one for all students. That would make it easier for me to instruct all the students at the same time rather than a few at a time. We all know that students learn differently, but most have to manipulate to learn, and some need lots of repetion, while others just get it and go. This would also save the advanced students some frustration with others who are not so advanced. I would love to use the apps as classroom independent instruction.
Bless you! I don't know what grade you teach, but you couldn't have said it better. I teach 6th grade, and it drives me crazy that students don't know all their facts, but instead, count up or down to add or subtract, and count skip count for multiplication. Division is another issue! And yes, I wish everyone could have an iPad.
Topic A: I currently teach third grade and it would really be helpful if students came into third grade knowing how to add and subtract. Every year students start the third grade not knowing how to add and subtract, which is really frustrating. It would also be nice if they knew place value as well.
Topic B: I used my iPad in class this year but not as much as I would've wanted to. During the summer I am going to look for more educational apps and utilize them with my students. I know my students enjoyed using the iPad this year and can't wait to find new ways to incorporate it in my classroom for next year!
Wow the year has gone by so fast...every year seems faster!
A: One thing my 3rd grade class struggles with more and more at the beginning of the year is basic facts. I know they are being taught, but using fingers and pictures seems to be the only ways they are achieved. It would be nice if over the summer they worked on them, especially doubles. It would make math so much easier for them. I tell my class this same thing about multiplication facts going to 4th grade...it will just make your life easier. I have made a point to spend more time on these this year and I think it is paying off, but they have to keep practicing over the summer.
B: I have been using the cubes for volume this past week and the kids love them...which is a plus when it comes to teaching volume. I know these can be used in many other ways and I am going back in all my plans and making notes about many things including using these cubes in other ways. The ipads also...I am making a list of programs that I think are good for a 3rd-4th grade student so they can program all of our ipads over the summer.

Wow....I can't believe this year is almost over and this course is coming to an end. It seems like yesturday that we all gathered together at the ECS to start this adventure. It's CRAZY how fast it went by.
Anyways, back to the FINAL TOPIC!
Topic A: I teach fourth grade and I would love for my students to already know their multiplicaiton facts before they come to my class. I feel as though if they come to fourth grade with that knowledge of ALL of their muliplication facts then they would have an easier time with mulitplication and division problems.
Topic B: I LOVED my Ipad and used it throughout the school year in the classroom. My students and I had a great time learning everytime we used it. I only wish I had Ipads for all of my students to utilize. I believe this would be a great tool to have in the classroom for every student. I think I still need to learn alot more with the Ipad and get some more "awesome" educational apps that I may not have or found. So if anyone would love to share those apps I would greatly appreciate it!!!!
I am definitely counting down the days. This year was very challenging and I hope that all the teachers in my grade level have learned a little something from this awesome program. I literally have Christine on speed dial. I feel I have grown as a teacher and I am thankful for the grant. I hope to learn even more next year and utilize with my new nuggets. In Topic A you asked what we would like upcoming students to practice in the summer...well I would like them to come into 5th "ready to jump right into grade level material" but we all know that is just not going to happen, unfortunately I would love if 4th grade teachers could express the importance of READING over summer. I know this is about Math, but lets face it...without READING the students are not successful in Math, because it is reading. Just to practice.practice.practice reading out loud & build some confidence. In regards to Math, Kelli unfortunately those students come to 5th grade also not knowing their multiplications, so it is important they too practice that over summer break. Division is an area of concern. I had an idea of preparing a packet for them over summer to prepare for 5th grade In Topic B you asked what I wish I would have utilized more...I used my iPAD for almost everything & found it easier to connect to Elmo. I like others, would like a class set. That would be amaze. I am fortunate to have new computers (6) in the class now, so I won't complain.

For some reason, the first time I responded to this did not submit correctly. And I had really good responses too. I hope I can remember what I wrote. Here it goes:
TOPIC A: I teach 7th grade math, math intervention and pre-algebra. I think that if students came in with a deeper understanding of multiplication and division, they would have an easier time learning the process of operations with fractions, decimals, and integers. 7th graders don't just need to learn all the operations with all these forms of numbers, but they must also be able to generate and match up models of these operations. That is my least favorite part. Manipulatives have helped, but modeling varies with the resource, so it would help for students to also have practice and exposure to all the different types of modeling that can be used in mathematics.
TOPIC B: I've been able to use my iPad in class in the past. I've exposed the students to apps that are great at practicing different mathematics skills with games. I've also allowed students to use Educreations to create a lesson and present it to the class. I was able to use the unifix cubes during the Geometry unit for area and volume. I have a project that I do with students where they remodel their bedroom. I'd like to use the cubes so students could create a scale model of their rooms or a room at home. I've also thought about putting students in groups and having them design a fantasy room, then have them put all the rooms together to make their fantasy house.
Topic A: I wish that students coming in from the 2nd grade would come in knowing and using strategies and knowing that they must show work on paper and not in their head. I know that 2nd grade teachers do this in their classrooms already, but I wish that students would apply it! Students come in thinkning that there is going to be new strategies taught to them about objectives that they already learned. I tell my students that they must use what they learned in the previous years and apply them and when we come across a new objective then I will teach them a new strategy. I also, wish that they would come in knowing that they cannot subtract a large number from a small number. When setting up a subtraction problem they always want to put the larger number on the bottom. YIKES!! Again, I know that they are teaching them the right way the students are just being forgetful when they start the year.
Topic B: I did not get wifi until the second semester, so I wasn't unable to use the iPad as much as I wanted too. I do want to add more apps this summer and prepare it for the incoming students next year. I know that they would love having and using it to learn. I did use the omnifix cubes during the last six weeks of school. I used it to show volume and students were able to visualize and make different shapes with different volumes. I want to study it more during the summer to be able to use it for other objectives other than volume.
Topic A. I currently teach 5th grade math. Students enetering 5th grade next year should know their addition, subtraction and multiplication facts. We reviewed and practiced throughout the year. I still have students having diffuculty with their facts. This makes teaching division, and fractions difficult. I also have students counting on fingers for addition and subtraction.
I would also like them to show their thinking (work). Many of my students have responded I'm thinking in my head.
Topic B. I was able to use my swag. There are a couple of apps I would like to look into. Our district has also purchased Ipads for classroom use. I want to share what is best for math practice. I also would like to use my omnifix cubes. I used the cubes for volume, prime and composite numbers.
I might be moving grade levels so I will most definately research for that specific grade. I will have a busy summer planning for 5th or 3rd grade.
Topic A: I would like the third grade classes to come up knowing their multiplication facts up to the 6 and
knowing how visualize/draw a picture of the problem.
Topic B: I used the cubes with area, perimeter, volume, arrays, fractions, patterns, and symmetry. I have several apps for math that I used in small groups with my remedial students. I took pictures of activivies and shared them with the students and teachers. I am going to look for activites/lessons for the ipad with the new box light projector.
Toptic A / I want my students to practice basic operations with integers, decimals and fractions, order PDF operations, and simple algebraic equations.
Topic B / I want to have my student make a lesson and present it using the iPads.
I am a third grade Math teacher at Sinton Elem.
Topic A:
* Among the most important of objective to cover is Number sense. I realize the reading is a great part of testing in Math, however, many students could do more with numbers if they were as fluent with numbers as they are with words.
* Further, I am less worried about my students coming to me with a memorized set of multiplication facts. Rather spend some time make sure they understand how to add and subtract, and fill in number lines.
Topic B:
* I started the year using a google calendar to plan my lessons. However I have been restricted to very little ability to customize the calendar to fit my needs. I went on a search and found Planbook.com. I used this website to create my summer school lesson plans and think that I will be using this tool in the next year. The best part is there is no need for an app as the website works beautifully with the iPad.
* I created a small group recording form on Google forms. I found it on pintrest but have found it is very useful. I plan to use it to record small group activity that can be used for RTI or SPED and 504 Accommodation documentation.
* I would like to better implement the use of Class Dojo for behavior next year
* I did create and use EdModo this year and plan to continue its use more next year. Parents really love having an open line of communication with the teacher.
I am a 4th grade math teacher and I would like for incoming 4th graders to practice their multiplication facts! This would help enormously when we introduce division, especially long division!!! I would also love for them to come to me having number sense! I think that this is probably the skill that is the most lacking when students come to me in the fall. Just being able to think through a problem and asking themselves, "Is this logical? Does this make sense?" would be a tremendous help!
As far as what I would like to do more of next year.....Use the IPads more as a whole class. We are very fortunate at our school to actually be able to check out class sets. I used them for research in my science and social studies classes, but I really didn't utilize them in math. My goal next year is to research some really cool apps and let my kids use these to practice their mathematics!
I Am a sixth grade teacher and would love my students to know their multiplication facts and strategies to solve multiplication problems. Changing fraction from mixed to improper and back and strong understanding of fractions.
I Wasn't sure about the cubes at first bit the students enjoyed them. Used the book that came with the cubes. The students pay minecraft and roadblock Which uses cubes for building. The iPads were great but we could only use free apps. Started "think through math" I found at the end of year Will look into it more for next year. Would like students to have headphones for next year.
Topic A: I am currently teaching 7th and 8th grade Math and I have found that their weakest area in Math is their Multiplication. I am amazed that they lack in this area which of course is the root of all other areas in Math. As we worked on fractions, they all really lack in the ability to see what the common denominators are going to be without actually working out lots of multiplication problems. Another thing I have found is the inability to visualize pictures when working with word problems. I am so tired of hearing students ask me if they should multiply or divide on a certain problem. If they learned how to draw out pictures for the word problems and what they are asking it would make their solving of the problems easier. Most word problems can be solved by drawing pictures.
Topic B: I absolutely loved watching the students explore with the unifix cubes. I wish we had more hours in the day to expand or lessons with these cubes. I hope that next year I can work these cubes into more of my lessons. I did use my IPad in class a lot this year and the students absolutely loved it when I was able to connect to my projector. The different apps were great and some of my students did teach me a thing or two since they are surely more tech savy than I am.. lol Now my future wish here is to have an IPad for each student or maybe even if I had several I could group the students to use it.
Ahh Dreams what would we do without them.....
Topic A: I am not sure exactly what I am teaching next year, but whether it is Geometry or Algebra II or PreCal, the number one thing they should practice and keep practicing is manipulating equations, i.e. solving for variables in equations with more than variable. The other is just solving equations. if they can manipulate equations and solve for them, the rest will be much easier.
Topic B: I can't really think of anything specific that I want to do with the iPad. Maybe use it to make videos for use with the flipped classroom. I have made videos, but the iPad might be a better choice. The cubes can be used for a lot of things in Geometry which I did not teach this year. I think if I teach Geometry they will get used much more than they were this year.
Topic A : If there were two things I could ask the prior teacher to make sure the students know before they get to 5th grade it would be their Multiplication facts 1-12. The other would be to read word problems and be able to tell me what the problem is asking them for.
Topic B : I would like to look into other apps. I could use in my 5th grade classroom to show with the new iBox projector our classrooms all received.
Topic A. The two things I would like from prior grade would be that they would know their multiplications. Another thing would be that they would understand how to read a word problem and set it up using the Understanding, Plan,Solving and Checking.
Topic B. I will be using the Omnifi more next year which will give my students more hands on activities. Plus using new apps on my IPad with the Light Box White Board.
That would be nice. Let's see if the lower grade levels are implementing the multiplication program. It would be better if we went back to Sharon Wells across the board.
Topic A: On the academic side, I would like the students to come to third grade having an understanding of numbers: can you explain your thinking? is your answer reasonable? Why?. Place value and basic addition and subtraction would be a plus.
Topic B: I have loved the iPad and Omnifix cubes. I would like to use the iPad in more ways next year such as more Math apps/games for the kids. I used it with my projector to do Math lessons and show Science web-based video clips. Just to expand in those two areas is a goal. The iPad and visual lessons definitely keep the student's attention. The Omnifix cubes were used in building arrays, fraction models, patterning, etc... I will continue to use them. They are great because there is a large amount and enough for all kids! Thank you for these things to use in my classroom.
Our district is going to grade-center campus', so I will be able to plan and share math ideas with more teachers in the coming school year.

Topic A: I hope that our incoming fourth graders continue working on their mulitiplication facts because that operation seems to give a high percentage of our students difficulty. I tell my students, when you learn mulitiplication, division becomes much easier.
Topic B: As I stated in an earlier discussion, the use of Ipads was not allowed at our campus due to restrictions from technology department. I hope that things change within that department allowing the access of Ipad for use in the classroom. I seriously believe that it will happen as our superintendent talked about tablets to be used by our students in our campus!!!

Topic A: Master those math facts. In reading the above responses, I am certainly not alone in that request. I would also like for students to really understand place value--it is crucial in understanding how decimals, fractions and percents work. I would also like for students to be able to read word problems more technically, visualize the problem, and think about what needs to be done because we begin to write equations with variables in order to solve.
Topic B: I used the iPad as much as I was allowed at school. I want to explore more apps, and find ways to incorporate them into lessons, although I don't think that individual tablets will be incorporated yet, so I need to find ways to surmount that. The Omnifix cubes were fun. I need to find the time this summer to expand on their uses and study the book.

One thing that I wish alI incoming 5th grades knew would be there multiplication facts. The second skill they really need is to able to draw a picture for all word problems. Last summer our district meet with every math teacher in there groups by grade level. Every group was acted the same question you asked. Every group even high school had "students need to know there facts" as the first request. The second answer was to be able to understand word problems.

Next year I want to use the I pads more. Too would his it would be nice to have more devices. I do not use then all the time because ten to a group is to many kids. I also want to use the cubes more. I need to use them alone I with learning their facts. Maybe that with help to concrete the facts in their minds. I also want to learn how use a drawing applisnipsnip
WHAT A YEAR!!!!! I always hope that students come to me, knowing how to multiply, divided, and have a solid understanding of place value. I 100% now that fourth grade teachers teach theses concepts and students have knowledge of these concepts; in May. Then summer hits and students loose these concepts through sun burns and late nigh slumber parties! This is where spiraling can somewhat mend those losses. I plan on doing more spiraling this coming year. I will uses the ipads and manipulatives that we have been graciously given to support old and new concepts! With the challenges this upcoming year will present, I plan on using this summer to brain storm ( hello pinterest) ways to close gaps and teach new concepts that will stick.
What I would like the students to know at the beginning of the year is their fact families (all operations). Also I know this is wishful thinking but I would like for them to come in knowing what operation to use and why when solving problems.
I would like to incorporate the Ipad more in my classroom such as having the students use it to create lesson and share with their classmates. I would also like the also use the omifix cubes for perimeter, area and volume.
What I hope my students have when they come to me next year just like you all to have the background of place value and at least the concept of multiplication down pat. I had students this year come to me at 1st grade knowledge and that was most of my homeroom this year. I just prayed that I could show significate growth and Thank the Lord! I did but still students should at least have some sort of number sense so I am hopeful that this year coming up are going to be more stronger in their math skills than this year past.
Next year I want to use my Ipad more with my students, I did use it with after school tutoring but I want to use it more during regular class time. I had very needy students this year that required more of teacher directed that really I wasnt use to so I really did not get to do alot of activities that I would have liked to do. I am planning to set up a more center based classroom this coming year in hopes that the students I have will be more independent thinkers.
Topic A - I taught Geometry and Math Models this year. I never know what I will be teaching the next year. Most have mentioned the desire for their students to come to them being able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. It is sad but even my high school students grab a calculator to multiply and divide by 2. I would like my students to have some number sense, be able to manipulate and solve simple equations.
Topic B - The grant has really inspired be to embrace technology as a tool in the classroom and in preparing lessons. My main goal is to learn how to utilize the ipad with my smart board. Like everyone else I wish I had more ipads so my whole class could use them. It has been my experience that it takes at least a year for me to start really utilizing the tools we have been provided. With the 2011- 2012 grant I received an Nspire. I didn't really feel comfortable using it in instruction until this year. I know it has a lot more capabilities as well that I hope to use next year. Same with the omnifix cubes. We are continually learning and sharing our discoveries. Thank you everyone for what you have shared this past year and the upcoming year!!

Topic A/ In addition to knowing their facts addition/subtraction for 2nd grade and multiplication for 3rd grade, I would like for the students to come knowing thier vocabulary words for thier levels.
Topic B/ Next year I would I like to work more with teachers and help them plan and share math ideas. Then, use these ideas to help students succeed.
It's been a fabulous year. I hope my students practice using math in everyday situations over the summer, I hope their parents give them money and let them figure out what they can buy instead of ordering for them. I hope they practice using elapsed time at home. I just want them to realize that math is important and they use it every day without even thinking about it.
I hope next year I can incorporate Qr codes in my iPad uses.The scanner app was not downloaded this year, but I will push for it again next year so that I can create stations and scavenger hunts with our math TEKS. Thanks Christine for all of the great technology and the instruction to go with it!
