While reading the article titled, Nine Characteristics of a Great Teacher, I was nodding my head agreeing that those are the characteristics I feel make a great teacher.
I can think back to my favorite teachers from elementary school to college and there are common characteristics about them. I have to say for me, the teachers who impressed me most were the ones who treated students with dignity and had a passion for helping all students learn. I remember my favorite teacher in high school, Mrs. Carlson, would stand at the door with a big smile on her face and welcome everyone as they came in. She was so kind to everyone by valuing opinions and answering any questions. It was such a turn off for me when a teacher was demeaning or humiliated a student.
What do you feel are the characteristics of a great teacher? What fond memories do you have of your favorite teacher?
This is a good question because it makes us focus on those great teachers in our lives who made an impact on our future. I am listing the 9 characteristics here just so others can reference quickly the traits of a great teacher.
I have fond memories of a college English professor who mentored me throughout my major studies. We would sip tea in her office and discuss Shakespeare for hours. She took great interest in my work and my family and shared the joys of the teaching profession. We continued to correspond throughout my teaching career, and she always offered wisdom and encouragement when I sought her advice. I just visited her again recently and showed her pictures of my grown daughters (one of whom is a college professor). My mentor is now 85-years-old. Her mind is sharp, and she will always be a cherished colleague and friend.
