When you are considering informational text for your students, what kinds of material are you introducing?
Many states have adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Within the CCSS, there are reading standards included for informational text as well as for literature. The Common Core Standards’ definition of informational text includes biographies and memoirs. Another definition of informational text – one from the Correll Book Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Informational Text –excludes biographies and memoirs because they aren’t strictly informational in nature. Thoughts?
Well if you exclude memoirs and biographies then would you also exclude narrative nonfiction, like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for high school students? And one of my favorite series for upper elementary is the Scientists in the Field series. Each book is a little different but they tell a story and feature real people. So many of the best books are hard to categorize, I think.
