I think it actually depends on what show you are watching. Some of them are tough, manly, and pigs. However, there are some shows that show men as nerdy and socially akward. It is also the same with women. SOme women are independent, some are more reliant on men. YOu can't really say one thing about all TV.
The portrayl is dependent on the show you are watching, for example, if you are Watching Jersey Shore, you will see that the women are seen as sexual figures and ignorant, whereas men are viewed as muscluar beings with large egos. If you were watching a show such as 18 kids and counting you will see a relgious family with goals and lifestyle outlooks.
Alishia: I think it portrays the women as "easy" and degrading to themselves and set a sterotype for other women. The men are usually shown as stong and powerful over the women.
Kisha: I think it shows women wanting to have sexual intercourse with men and not caring about their reputation. The men get looked up to tho for doing all this with different women.
