How are you using the Verizon Thinkfinity Community with Students?

Throughout the community there are lots of teacher owned groups who have invited their students to join them in the community. Since many of these groups are private, it would be nice to share how you are using the community with students.

One way that I have seen it used is for enrollment flexibility. Oftentimes, only students and teachers can participate in a school run LMS. By creating a community, teachers can invite parents, guest speakers and other community members into the group to collaborate and share with their students. By letting down the four walls of your classroom and opening it up to interested folks, your students benefit.

Are you using the community with students? If so, what types of activities lend themselves to a community? What are the advantages of the community over your learning management system (LMS)? What advice would  you give to people considering starting a student group?
