Assessment tools?

Hi Fellow Special Educators,

As the school year approaches I am wondering what formal and informal assessment tools you use consistently that are not only valid and research-based but that also give information that is helpful in monitoring progress and writing IEP goals. I'm a middle school special educator so I'm mostly interested in assessment tools for assessing 6th-8th graders. I'd love to hear what you think!

A few things I have done is to use district benchmarks, to use Edusoft to create individualized tests based on specific IEP goals, to use assessments developed by Curriculum Associates, and to use student work samples/informal observation. Another thing I do is to get with general education teachers at my grade level and at the instructional level that my students are performing at. Many of them have diagnostic testing or test prep materials that they simply don't have time to use or that they prefer not to use. I find I can often use the diagnostic tests to measure my students' growth.
