Is Your School or District Using Google Apps for Education?

Many schools are adopting Google Education for email, collaborative documents and website creation. Why? I would guess because Google offers all of their services for free to districts and with tight budgets districts are looking for alternatives to their paid subscriptions. I have found that teachers and students love Google Education because it is user friendly, collaborative and allows teachers to individualize instruction.

I do a lot of trainings that combine advanced MS Office skills w/ Google Docs.  For example, I will spend half the session transitioning teachers from Word 2003 to Word 2007 (2010 is out and most schools around here are just moving to 2007 now.) then follow up with how Google Docs works with Word and how these two appllications can be used in the classroom.

Teachers set up classroom Google accounts and using Google Docs as a great web based application for students to collaborate and share information all under the watchful eye of the teacher.

We began using Google Apps District wide this spring.  I was part of a pilot group and worked mainly with a second grade  and fifth grade class. Our school district created a permission form that students must complete before receiving their username and password.

There will be training for teachers designed and delivered in the coming months.  I presented to district media specialists in January.  They in turn returned to their schools and began using Google Apps.

One successful tool is using Google Forms for Administrative walkthroughs.  It works well on the iPods and staff is able to record their information quickly and Google does the rest!
