We started our debates today. I picked 4 areas for topics: gentically modified crops, human genetic engineering, cloning, and stem cell research. To determine the teams I had each student research the topics. Then I had them pick a topic, and whether they were for or against it. Then I gave them several days for research. To ensure that they would do some research a portion of their grade is on the research they turn in. The other portion will be a participation grade. So far as expected there were some groups not very prepared. However there were several that were, and they did very well in sparking discussion. This will take several days to do, and I have to pay close attention to keep emotions in check. At the end of each topic I pass out a survey to the audience, to see what their opinion is on the subject, if the debate changed that, and who they thought won the debate. Our I pads have played a big part in our research and the debates themselves.
