Nearly 30 years ago, Hosni Mubarak took over rule of Egypt when Anwar EL Sadat, former leader of Egypt, was assassinated. In early 2011, amid a wave of regional unrest, Egyptian citizens began protesting the leadership of Mubarak and his government.
The impact of the uprising is being felt around the globe. Bordering one of the busiest shipping channels in the world, the Suez Canal, Egypt influences major oil shipments from some of the largest oil-producing countries. In the United States, we are seeing the stock market impacted as the potential for oil-supply disruption mounts. The United States has strong foreign relation ties to the country: Egypt is the second-largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid.
