The recipients included elementary, middle, and high school math teachers. The problem is implicitly personalized — students have to find the value of the letters in their name, based on some criteria given in the problem. "The students were communicating about mathematics and having a great time. The problem was hard, but the difficulty is what encouraged them to seek help from others. This activity did a masterful job of utilizing several of the Common Core mathematical practices. Thank you for sharing this activity!”</li><li>A middle school teacher told us, "I would like to use this holiday math problem with my students, but I can't give them a problem that seems to be impossible to solve, even for a school full of teachers. Does your school allow you access to student standarized test scores from previous years? I saw a lesson once where the teacher had her kids do something similar, and it was very effective. It also had kids work with pounds vs. dollars, so there was some implicit conversion practice. Some of the less mathy kids really got into the historical part of it.</p><p style="min-height: 8pt; height: 8pt; padding: 0px;"> </p><p>The lesson <strong><a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=L805">Invest in Your Education</a></strong> from Illuminations uses sales tax (and other fees and discounts) to teach about percents. The woman who wrote this lesson for us based it on what she did in the classroom -- kids would arrive one day, and all furniture and class supplies (books, pencils, calculators) would be piled in the back of the room. Kids had to purchase the supplies they needed using fake money and calculating the cost of the items. The teacher gives a topic. This week, it was Thanksgiving. He decided he'd like to share how many turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving day. Before researching the answer, he and his twin brother estimated. First guess was a billion. Then we discussed that Thanksgiving is a national holiday, and there are only 300 million people in the U.S. And then he realized that sometimes one turkey is used at a gathering of many people, so it'd be much less than 300 million. He finally guessed 8 million. His twin brother guessed 4 million. I split the difference and guessed 6.7 million.</p><p style="min-height: 8pt; height: 8pt; padding: 0px;"> </p><p>We all woefully underestimated. According to <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://www.infoplease.com/spot/tgturkeyfacts.html">Turkey Facts (infoplease.com)</a>, approximately <strong>45 million turkeys</strong> are consumed on Thanksgiving day! Holy smokes! That accounts for one-sixth of all turkeys consumed in the U.S. annually.</p><p style="min-height: 8pt; height: 8pt; padding: 0px;"> </p><p>Are there any fun activities you'll be doing in your class for Turkey Day?
